Today We Remember. Today We Discover.

August 23 carries an unusually powerful mixture of remembrance, resistance, human achievement, tragedy, technology... and even a few reasons to celebrate our inner nerd. 🤓🌍

Let’s open today’s page of history.

⛓️ INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE REMEMBRANCE OF THE SLAVE TRADE AND ITS ABOLITION

August 23 is recognized internationally as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The date recalls the uprising that began during the night of August 22–23, 1791, in the French colony of Saint-Domingue.

Enslaved people rose against the colonial slave system.

That revolt became a crucial opening chapter of the Haitian Revolution, which ultimately produced an independent Haiti in 1804.

Today’s observance remembers the millions of Africans who were forcibly removed from their homes during centuries of the transatlantic slave trade, while recognizing resistance, survival and the continuing consequences of slavery and racial injustice.

History is not only a record of what people endured.

It is also a record of those who refused to remain silent.

🕯️

🖤 BLACK RIBBON DAY

August 23 is also observed as the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, commonly known as Black Ribbon Day.

The date marks the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact on August 23, 1939.

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union publicly agreed to non-aggression while secret protocols divided portions of Eastern Europe into spheres of influence.

Within days, Europe would descend into World War II.

Today, the date serves as a remembrance of the millions who suffered under totalitarian regimes.

🌍 TODAY’S THREAD

August 23 gives us resistance against slavery.

Resistance against tyranny.

Wars that changed continents.

Workers demanding dignity.

Humanity looking back at Earth from the Moon.

And another civilization successfully touching the lunar surface.

History rarely moves in one direction.

It advances.

It collapses.

It remembers.

It forgets.

It fights.

It learns.

And sometimes, thousands of years into the human experiment, we finally get far enough away from our planet...

to turn around and see home.

🌎

That is August 23.
