Today marks Ukraine Independence Day, commemorating the declaration adopted by Ukraine’s parliament on August 24, 1991, as the Soviet Union was collapsing.

In 2026, the date marks 35 years since that declaration of independence.

Independence is never merely a date printed in a history book.

It is the assertion that a people have the right to determine their own future.

Ukraine’s August 24 remains one of the defining sovereignty milestones to emerge from the final months of the Soviet era.
