It is habitat.
Reservoir.
Weather-maker.
Food source.

Humans are very good at noticing movement.
Storms.
Wars.
Markets.
Elections.
Launches.
Explosions.
But some of the systems most important to survival work almost silently.
Water cycles.
Soil.
Wetlands.
Forests.
Lakes.
The quieter something is, the easier it can be to underestimate.
Until it disappears.

On August 27, 1991, Moldova declared its independence from the Soviet Union.
Independence days are often remembered through flags, speeches and ceremonies.
Underneath them lies something more fundamental:
the right of a people to determine their own future.

A drill crosses into ancient geology.
A spacecraft leaves Earth.
Our eyes cross millions of miles toward another world.
The important question is rarely whether humanity can cross the boundary.
We are remarkably good at that.
The harder question is:
What happens after we do?
Protect the water.
Respect the people.
Question the conflict.
Explore the universe.
Remember consequences.
And every once in a while...
