🌎🕊️ ANOTHER DAY FOR PEACE
Yesterday, the world marked the International Day of Peace.
Today, the calendar offers us another invitation:
The International Day of Radiant Peace.
Two consecutive days.
Two different observances.
One stubborn human hope.
🕊️
Perhaps that is appropriate.
Because peace has never been a one-day assignment.
It cannot be posted once, celebrated once, prayed for once, and then placed back on the shelf until next September.
Peace has to be practiced again tomorrow.
And again after that.
And again after that.
Maybe that is what radiant peace suggests.
Not merely the absence of conflict.
But peace that travels outward.
From one person.
Into one room.
Into one family.
Into one neighborhood.
Into one nation.
Into one world.

A peaceful world is not built only in conference halls.
It is also built when somebody chooses patience instead of cruelty.
When somebody listens instead of humiliates.
When somebody forgives.
When somebody protects another person.
When somebody refuses to turn disagreement into hatred.
When somebody decides that another human being's dignity is not negotiable.
Small light.
Passed onward.

And September 22 gives us several other reminders that we share this planet with considerably more than ourselves.
🦏 WORLD RHINO DAY
Today calls attention to the world's remaining rhinoceros species and the continuing need to protect them.
A rhinoceros may look prehistoric because, in a sense, it carries something ancient with it.
Massive.
Armored.
Powerful.
And still vulnerable to decisions made by one comparatively small primate:
us.
Conservation is ultimately an exercise in restraint.
Human beings deciding that something does not need to belong to us in order to deserve to remain.

🐘 ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY
And after today's Rabbit Hole about animal communication, this one feels especially fitting.
Elephants live in complex social groups.
They remember.
They communicate.
They maintain relationships across years.
And research continues revealing just how much of their social world humans have barely begun to understand.
Perhaps appreciation should begin with humility:
We do not yet know everything that is happening inside another mind.

🚲 WORLD CAR FREE DAY
Today also encourages people, where practical, to leave the automobile behind and walk, cycle or use public transportation.
It is partly about emissions.
But it also asks a wonderfully strange question:
What happens to a city when streets temporarily become places for people again?
You hear things.
Footsteps.
Conversation.
Birds.
Children.
The ordinary soundtrack buried beneath engines.
Sometimes changing how we travel changes what we notice.

September 22 also brings the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.
For one fleeting astronomical moment, day and night approach balance.
Light.
Darkness.
Neither winning.
Neither disappearing.
Just the Earth continuing its ancient journey around the Sun.
There is something beautifully appropriate about encountering that balance during two consecutive days devoted to peace.
Nature rarely remains perfectly balanced.
Neither do human beings.
But equilibrium remains something toward which systems can move.

September 22 marks the fictional birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
Which means somewhere, surely, second breakfast is being served.
And perhaps Tolkien accidentally belongs in today's peace conversation too.
Because some of his most enduring heroes were not conquerors.
They were small people.
Gardeners.
Friends.
Travelers.
Ordinary individuals who found themselves carrying extraordinary responsibility.
There is something worth remembering there.

We often imagine that changing the world requires enormous power.
Sometimes it does.
But the world is also changed by countless small decisions nobody photographs.
Kindness.
Restraint.
Stewardship.
Courage.
Listening.
Protecting something that cannot protect itself.
Choosing peace when hostility would be easier.
Choosing another tomorrow.

So perhaps September 22 gives us one simple assignment:
Let peace radiate one person farther than ourselves.
Yesterday we invested in peace.
Today...
we let it travel.
