THE ORIGINAL GLOBAL NETWORK
World Post Day • Friday, October 9, 2026
Long before the cloud, before email, before social media, before artificial intelligence...
there was the post.
A letter crossed a town.
Then a state.
Then an ocean.
Someone placed words into an envelope, trusted an enormous invisible system of people, routes, sorting rooms, vehicles, addresses, stamps, schedules and agreements...
and expected those words to arrive.
Today is World Post Day, marking the founding of the Universal Postal Union in Bern in 1874. The 2026 theme is particularly apt for the AI age:
“One postal network, infinite possibilities.” AIAI.today October 9
That sounds surprisingly contemporary.
Because beneath the stamps and mailbags, the postal system solved a problem we are still wrestling with in artificial intelligence:
How do you make an enormous network useful to ordinary people?
📬 THE POST OFFICE WAS AN INTERFACE
Most people never needed to understand the machinery.
They did not need to know:
which sorting center handled the letter
which train carried it
which international treaty made delivery possible
which employee routed it
which database recognized the address
or which road the carrier would take.
They needed three things:
an address
a message
trust that the system would do the rest
That is remarkably close to what AI is becoming.
The user should not need to understand:
model architecture
tokenization
vector databases
routing
agents
APIs
inference infrastructure
or orchestration layers.
They should be able to say:
“Here is where I want this to go.”
And the system should help get it there.
🤖 AI IS BECOMING A ROUTING SYSTEM
At first, generative AI looked mostly like a clever conversation box.
Ask question.
Receive answer.
But that is changing.
AI increasingly sits between:
people and information
people and software
people and creative tools
people and institutions
people and other people.
That makes the AI system less like a typewriter...
and more like a sorting station.
Intent arrives.
The system interprets it.
It determines where the work belongs.
One tool researches.
Another generates an image.
Another produces audio.
Another searches files.
Another schedules something.
Another writes.
Another verifies.
Then the pieces come back together.
The user sees one conversation.
Behind it may be an entire little postal service.
📮 THE ADDRESS MATTERS
The postal system works because an envelope has a destination.
AI systems can fail spectacularly when the destination is vague.
“Make this better.”
Better how?
For whom?
For what purpose?
“Research this.”
To discover what?
To decide what?
“Create something.”
For which audience?
In which medium?
With what constraints?
One lesson from the humble envelope may be surprisingly useful:
A clear destination improves delivery.
That is true for letters.
It is increasingly true for prompts.
📨 BUT DELIVERY IS NOT ENOUGH
A letter delivered to the wrong house is technically movement...
but not success.
AI has the same problem.
An answer can be:
fluent
beautiful
fast
confident
and completely wrong.
So the future of AI cannot merely optimize for:
output produced
It must increasingly optimize for:
the right thing reaching the right place in the right form.
That requires context.
Verification.
Memory.
Permissions.
Boundaries.
And sometimes the ability to say:
I am not certain where this belongs.
That sentence may be the AI equivalent of returning an envelope marked:
ADDRESS UNKNOWN.
Much better than confidently delivering it to the wrong doorstep.
🌐 THE POSTAL SYSTEM ALSO TEACHES US ABOUT STANDARDS
International mail works because nations agreed on enough common rules to cooperate.
Different languages.
Different governments.
Different currencies.
Different transport systems.
Yet the letter can cross borders.
AI may eventually require something similar.
Not one giant AI.
But many different systems able to communicate through agreed standards:
agents
models
databases
creative tools
personal assistants
enterprise systems
robots
and perhaps forms of AI we have not invented yet.
The future may not be:
ONE MACHINE THAT DOES EVERYTHING.
It may be:
MANY MACHINES THAT KNOW HOW TO HAND THE PACKAGE TO THE NEXT ONE.
That is a much more interesting possibility.
🧭 AND THEN THERE IS TRUST
Postal networks are imperfect.
Things get lost.
Things arrive late.
Addresses change.
Mistakes happen.
But the system became civilization-scale infrastructure because people developed enough confidence to use it routinely.
AI is nowhere near that level of social trust.
Nor should it be yet.
Trust should not come from impressive demonstrations.
It should come from:
reliability
transparency
correction
accountability
predictable behavior
and evidence accumulated over time.
The postal system earned its place by delivering billions of ordinary things correctly.
AI may have to do something similar.
Not amaze us once.
Serve us reliably a million times.
✍️ A LETTER WAS NEVER JUST DATA
There is one more thing AI should remember.
A letter is information.
But it is also intention.
Someone chose the words.
Someone addressed the envelope.
Someone sent it.
Someone waited.
Someone received it.
Sometimes someone kept it for fifty years.
The value was not merely in transmission.
It was in meaning crossing distance.
That may be one of the best aspirations for AI too.
Not simply moving information faster.
But helping meaning survive the journey.
🌎 OCTOBER 9 ALSO HAS A FEW OTHER DOORS
Today is also Leif Erikson Day, honoring one of the earliest known European voyages to North America. AIAI.today October 9
And Curious Events Day practically waves at AI Rabbit Holes from across the street. 🐰🕳️ AIAI.today October 9
History also marks October 9 with the publication of Korea’s Hangul alphabet, Kepler’s observation of the 1604 supernova, and other moments when humans found new ways to communicate, navigate or understand the world. AIAI.today October 9
A rather appropriate collection for World Post Day.
Exploration.
Language.
Observation.
Delivery.
Different forms of the same ancient human impulse:
GET SOMETHING FROM HERE TO THERE.
♾️ THE AIAI QUESTION
Perhaps one of the best models for AI's future is not a brain.
Not a genie.
Not a servant.
Not even a machine.
Perhaps it is something humbler:
A TRUSTED NETWORK THAT KNOWS WHERE THINGS NEED TO GO.
Your question.
Your idea.
Your photograph.
Your song.
Your message.
Your intention.
Received here.
Understood as well as possible.
Carried carefully.
Delivered somewhere useful.
And when the address is uncertain...
returned for clarification instead of thrown over somebody else's fence.
