Today begins with two enormous LLF Luminaries born on the same date, separated by 81 years.
One is celebrating his birthday with us.
The other left this world 80 years ago.
Yet both still inhabit millions of imaginations.

🎂 STEPHEN KING
Born September 21, 1947 • 79 Today
Long before haunted hotels, possessed automobiles, sinister clowns and towns where something was decidedly wrong beneath the surface, there was a boy in Maine who wanted to tell stories.
Stephen King became one of the most successful and influential popular writers of the modern era.
Carrie.
The Shining.
The Stand.
The Dead Zone.
It.
Misery.
The Green Mile.
11/22/63.
The Dark Tower.
And many, many more.
But reducing King to “the horror writer” misses a great deal of the landscape.
His stories repeatedly return to friendship, childhood, memory, sacrifice, ordinary people confronting extraordinary circumstances and the strange moral choices people make when the comfortable rules disappear.
Sometimes the monster is supernatural.
Sometimes the monster is human.
And occasionally the most important thing in a Stephen King story is simply whether people are willing to stand beside one another when darkness arrives.
At 79, King remains very much part of the literary world he helped reshape.

September 21, 1866 – August 13, 1946
Herbert George Wells was born 160 years ago today.
He died 80 years ago this summer.
Yet open almost any modern science-fiction toolbox and you will find fingerprints that look remarkably like his.
⏳ Time travel
👽 Alien invasion
🫥 Invisibility
🧬 Biological experimentation
🌙 Travel beyond Earth
🌎 Future civilizations
Wells did not invent every one of these ideas from nothing, but his novels helped turn them into enduring machinery for speculative storytelling.
The Time Machine arrived in 1895.
The Island of Doctor Moreau followed in 1896.
The Invisible Man in 1897.
The War of the Worlds in 1898.
Four extraordinary landmarks in four years.
Wells had trained in science, including biology, and brought scientific possibilities directly into fiction. His work did something science fiction would continue doing for generations:
It asked not simply,
“What can we invent?”
but also,
“What happens to humanity if we do?”
That second question is still following us.
Perhaps more closely than ever.

And there is something deliciously appropriate about celebrating Stephen King and H. G. Wells on the same day.
Wells opened doors into impossible futures.
King showed us what might be waiting in the room after we opened them.

Scottish novelist and poet whose works including Ivanhoe and Rob Roy helped establish the historical novel as a major literary form.

1894 – 1974
One of Hollywood's great character actors and the first performer to win three Academy Awards for acting, remembered through decades of American film and television.

1932 – 2021
Filmmaker, writer, actor, composer and independent-film pioneer whose work broke barriers and opened doors for generations of Black filmmakers.

And so September 21 gives us an unusually powerful reminder.
Wells died 80 years ago.
Yet someone can still pick up The Time Machine tonight and travel with him.
Virgil has been gone for more than two millennia.
Still we read him.
Cohen's voice still plays.
Van Peebles' films still move.
And Stephen King is still here, still writing, while generations who grew up with his stories introduce them to generations coming behind them.
Perhaps that is one of humanity's quiet miracles.
A life ends.
But sometimes an idea refuses to.
