Two days after Nazi Germany invaded Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany.

The European war had begun.

What initially appeared to be another territorial crisis became the opening of a conflict that would engulf continents, destroy cities, topple governments and kill tens of millions of people.

September 3, 1939 became one of the defining thresholds of the 20th century.

The world had crossed into World War II.

Four years later, on September 3, 1943, Allied forces landed on the Italian mainland.

The invasion opened a major new front in Europe.

On the same day, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, although the agreement would not be publicly announced until several days later.

The campaign that followed would become long, difficult and costly.

But another door into Axis-held Europe had opened.

Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita surrendered his forces in the Philippines on September 3, 1945.

Coming immediately after Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri, the event became another powerful symbol that the Pacific War had truly ended.

After years of occupation and brutal fighting, the Philippines entered a new chapter.

On September 3, 1971, Qatar became an independent sovereign state, ending its status as a British protectorate.

During peace, they quietly sustain the global supply system most of us rarely notice.

Merchant Navy Day remembers the people behind that invisible infrastructure.

September 3 celebrates one of humanity’s great architectural ambitions:

building upward.

Steel-frame construction, elevators, reinforced concrete and engineering advances transformed city skylines.

The skyscraper became more than a building.

It became a declaration:

Appropriately, architect Louis Sullivan, often called the “Father of Skyscrapers,” was born on September 3.
