🌎🕊️ TODAY, WE INVEST IN PEACE 🙏🏻🌎🙏🏻
There are days on the calendar devoted to doughnuts, peculiar hobbies, beloved songs and foods we didn't realize required their own holiday.
And then there are days that ask something more of us.
September 21 is the International Day of Peace.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, the observance eventually became an annual call for non-violence and ceasefire around the world.
The 2026 theme is:
INVEST IN PEACE
For Everyone. Everywhere. Every Day.
That word matters.
Invest.
Because peace is not simply what remains when the shooting stops.
Peace has infrastructure.
It is built in schools.
In neighborhoods.
Across dinner tables.
Inside institutions people can trust.
In conversations between people who disagree.
In protecting human dignity.
In choosing dialogue when anger would be easier.
And sometimes in the smallest act imaginable:
One human being deciding not to make another human being's day worse.

The United Nations calls attention this year to the “everyday architects of peace”: people building stability from the ground up, often without headlines, podiums or medals.
Teachers.
Volunteers.
Neighbors.
Caregivers.
Advocates.
Peacekeepers.
People willing to listen.
People willing to help.
People willing to build instead of break.
That makes today's challenge considerably more personal.
We may not control armies.
We may not negotiate treaties.
We may not sit at diplomatic tables.
But nearly every one of us controls a tiny piece of the world's emotional weather.
And tiny pieces add up.

☕ MEANWHILE... PUT THE KETTLE ON
September 21 is also National Chai Day.
Which seems rather appropriate.
Peace negotiations might improve considerably if everyone had to begin by sitting quietly with a fragrant cup of masala chai.
Cardamom.
Cinnamon.
Ginger.
Cloves.
Tea.
Milk.
A few minutes during which nobody is permitted to launch anything except another biscuit toward the table.

Today also brings World Gratitude Day, another idea that pairs rather nicely with peace.
Gratitude does not require pretending everything is wonderful.
It simply asks us to notice what remains worth protecting.
A person.
A friendship.
A meal.
A song.
A safe room.
A sunrise.
Another day.
Sometimes civilization is rebuilt from surprisingly small bricks.

September 21 has become inseparable from Earth, Wind & Fire's “September.”
The song was released in 1978, and its famous opening turned one particular date into a permanent little disco ball hanging from the calendar.
So today apparently requires both:
🕊️ World peace
and
🪩 dancing.
Frankly, humanity could probably use more of each.
There are also celebrations today for pecan cookies, pepper jack cheese and miniature golf, because the calendar refuses to maintain a single emotional register for more than thirty seconds.
And perhaps that's all right.
Human life has always been this strange mixture.
The profound beside the ridiculous.
Grief beside laughter.
Diplomacy beside dessert.
Wars we desperately need to end...
and somebody asking whether the little windmill on Hole 7 counts as two strokes.

So on September 21, 2026, perhaps we can hold all of it at once.
Invest in peace.
Practice gratitude.
Share some chai.
Call somebody you love.
Do something constructive.
And sometime before midnight...
dance.
Because building a better world does not require us to stop being human.
It requires us to become better at it.
