The struggle would continue for years.
But September 16 became the date associated with the beginning of that fight for independence.
Today it is marked by celebrations, flags, music, gatherings, and the ceremonial cry of independence.

September 16 also marks the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

And in 1982, the massacre at the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps began in Beirut.
Hundreds of civilians were killed over the following days.
