Some journeys require ships.
Others require only opening a book.
September 6 celebrates National Read a Book Day, an invitation to put the noise aside for a while and disappear into someone else's ideas, discoveries, history, imagination, or world.
And on this particular September 6, books have some formidable competition from history itself.
🌍 1522 — A SHIP RETURNS FROM A WORLD NOBODY HAD EVER SAILED AROUND
The Victoria, commanded on the final leg by Juan Sebastián Elcano, returned to Spain.
It was the sole surviving ship of the expedition begun under Ferdinand Magellan and completed the first recorded circumnavigation of Earth.
One battered ship returned home carrying something larger than cargo:
proof that human beings had sailed all the way around the planet.
🇸🇿 1968 — ESWATINI BECOMES INDEPENDENT
September 6 is Somhlolo Day, marking the independence of Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, from British rule.
Today marks its 58th anniversary of independence.
🇧🇬 1885 — BULGARIA'S UNIFICATION
September 6 also commemorates the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, one of the defining events in the formation of modern Bulgaria.
🇺🇸 1901 — PRESIDENT McKINLEY IS SHOT
President William McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.
He would die eight days later, elevating Vice President Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency and abruptly changing the direction of American political history.
🇪🇪 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 1991 — THE BALTIC STATES ARE RECOGNIZED
As the Soviet Union approached its final months, it formally recognized the independence of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Three nations stepped back onto the world stage.
🕯️ 1997 — THE WORLD SAYS GOODBYE TO DIANA
The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, was held at Westminster Abbey.
An enormous worldwide television audience watched a deeply personal tragedy become a shared global moment.

September 6, 2026 is also National Grandparents Day, honoring the generations that carry family stories forward.
