A belief can be deeply personal.

A prayer.

A tradition.

A conviction.

A question.

A refusal to believe at all.

And none of those should become a reason for another human being to be attacked, persecuted, imprisoned, displaced, or killed.

August 22 is the United Nations International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, established to honor victims and survivors of religiously motivated violence and to affirm freedom of religion or belief as a fundamental human right.

It follows immediately after yesterday’s remembrance of victims of terrorism.

Two consecutive days with one painfully simple message:

That feels almost suspiciously representative of us. 😝

Today also celebrates something humans have carried for thousands of years:

Folklore.

Myths.

Legends.

Songs.

Oral histories.

Family tales.

Stories told around fires long before books, printing presses, radio, television or the internet existed.

World Folklore Day reminds us that culture is not stored only in monuments and museums.

It lives in what people remember well enough to tell again.

That connects beautifully with something we were already thinking about today:

A story may begin in one voice.

Then another generation speaks it.

Then another.

The words may change slightly.

The language may change.

The storyteller certainly changes.

Yet something continues moving forward.

Culture itself is a kind of memory.

Then August 22 gives us a very small instruction:

Be an Angel Day encourages unexpected acts of kindness.

Not necessarily a grand gesture.

Hold the door.

Call someone.

Carry something.

Listen.

Feed somebody.

Forgive a small offense.

Notice the person everyone else walked past.

History is filled with enormous events.

Life is often changed by much smaller ones.

On August 22, 1864, twelve European nations signed the First Geneva Convention.

The agreement established protections for wounded soldiers and laid foundational principles for what would become modern international humanitarian law and the work associated with the Red Cross movement.

Consider the idea behind it.

Even during war...

there should be limits.

Even an enemy who is wounded remains human.

Even violence should not erase every obligation we owe one another.

That principle was imperfectly applied then.

It remains imperfectly applied now.

But humanity wrote something important into international law:

August 22 also sits at the beginning of one of history’s most consequential struggles against slavery.

In 1791, enslaved people in northern Saint-Domingue rose in rebellion, beginning the revolution that would eventually lead to the creation of Haiti, the world’s first independent Black republic born from a successful slave revolt.

The Haitian Revolution forced the Atlantic world to confront an uncomfortable contradiction.

Societies were proclaiming liberty...

while enslaving human beings.

History has a habit of testing whether our principles apply only to ourselves...

or to everyone.

On August 22, 1485, Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field, ending the Plantagenet dynasty and helping establish the Tudor monarchy under Henry VII.

A king fell.

A dynasty ended.

Another began.

For the people living through it, history probably did not feel like a clean chapter break.

It felt like uncertainty.

That is worth remembering.

The tidy labels come later.

On August 22, 1963, pilot Joe Walker flew the X-15 rocket plane to roughly 67 miles above Earth, crossing the commonly used Kármán-line threshold into space.

Imagine that view.

truth and propaganda,

memory and distortion.

The challenge is not simply learning that these differences exist.

It is learning to distinguish:

Disagreement from dehumanization.

Criticism from persecution.

Belief from coercion.

Freedom from domination.

Technology should not make it easier to erase people behind categories.

It should help us understand the complexity hiding inside them.

Religious freedom.

Folklore.

Humanitarian law.

The Haitian Revolution.

Kindness.

Even the view from the edge of space.

Different stories.

But perhaps they carry one shared question:

Room to believe differently.

Room to speak.

Room to remember.

Room to belong.

Room to live.

Room to tell their own story.

It becomes stronger when difference can exist without violence.

So today...

remember the people harmed because somebody decided their beliefs made them less worthy.

Listen to an old story.

Preserve a tradition.

Help somebody quietly.

And defend the radical idea that another person does not need to become like us before they deserve dignity.
