International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism 🕊️🌎🙏🏻
History often remembers the event.
The explosion.
The assassination.
The uprising.
The war.
The headline.
But behind every headline are people.
People who were going somewhere.
People who expected to come home.
People whose lives changed in seconds.
Families who continued living with an absence long after the news cameras moved on.
August 21 is the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, established by the United Nations to honor victims and survivors around the world and to emphasize their rights, dignity and continuing needs.
The observance asks us to do something deceptively simple:
Remember the human being behind the event.

🇵🇭 1983: NINOY AQUINO
On August 21, 1983, Philippine opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was assassinated after returning to Manila from exile.
His death became a catalytic moment in the political struggle against the Marcos dictatorship and helped energize the movement that would eventually culminate in the People Power Revolution.
Today the Philippines commemorates August 21 as Ninoy Aquino Day.
One person's death became part of a much larger national story.
But before Aquino became a symbol...
he was a person.
A husband.
A father.
A political opponent.
A man stepping from an airplane.
History often turns people into monuments.
Remembrance asks us to turn the monument back into a person.
🌺 1959: HAWAII BECOMES THE 50TH STATE
August 21 also marks the anniversary of Hawaii's admission to the United States in 1959, becoming the 50th state.
In Hawaii, Statehood Day is observed on the third Friday of August.
But history becomes more useful when we resist making it too tidy.
Statehood represents one chapter in a much longer Hawaiian story involving Indigenous culture, monarchy, annexation, migration, military strategy, tourism, identity and continuing debate about sovereignty.
One date can mean celebration to some...
and something much more complicated to others.
History rarely belongs inside a single sentence.

Today is also National Senior Citizens Day in the United States, proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to recognize the contributions and achievements of older Americans.
Our culture can become strangely obsessed with newness.
New technology.
New voices.
New trends.
New generations.
But civilization has another resource:
memory.
Older people carry experiences no database can duplicate exactly.
They remember what changed slowly.
What changed suddenly.
What people once thought impossible.
What everyone briefly believed would last forever.
And what happened next.
Age does not automatically create wisdom.
But lived experience creates evidence.
We should probably listen to more of it.

So perhaps digital self-care is not rejecting technology.
It is remembering:
You are allowed to decide what gets access to your attention.
That may become one of the essential skills of the AI age.

Today is also Poet's Day.
And poetry offers an almost opposite rhythm from the modern feed.
The feed says:
Next. Next. Next. Next.
The poem says:
Stay here.
Notice this word.
This image.
This silence.
This feeling.
A poem can make a person spend five minutes with something an algorithm might expect them to scroll past in half a second.
Perhaps poetry is one of humanity's oldest technologies for slowing attention down.

Artificial intelligence can process astonishing amounts of information.
Millions of documents.
Images.
Voices.
Patterns.
Signals.
Events.
But today's observances remind us of an important distinction:
Information is not remembrance.
A database can preserve a name.
A model can summarize an event.
An archive can retain a photograph.
But remembrance asks something more of us.
It asks:
Why does this person matter?
What was lost?
What should be learned?
What responsibility does memory create?
Those are not merely retrieval questions.
They are human questions about meaning.
And perhaps AI can help us ask them better...
provided we do not mistake possessing the record for understanding the life.
